Your First Session
You do not have to know what to say
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Here is exactly what you can expect when you come to Flourish Counseling for the first time.
What happens in your first session
A warm welcome
When you arrive — in person or by video — your therapist will greet you and help you get settled. There is no pressure to dive right in. The first few minutes are just about getting comfortable.
Getting to know you
Your therapist will ask some questions about what brought you in, a bit about your background, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. You share only what feels right — there is no wrong answer.
Talking about your goals
Together, you will start to explore what you want your life to look like. Your therapist will listen carefully and help you begin to name what matters most to you.
Questions and next steps
You will have time to ask anything you want — about the process, your therapist, or what comes next. By the end, you will have a sense of whether this feels like the right fit.
A few things worth knowing
- —You do not need to have a crisis or diagnosis to come to therapy.
- —It is completely normal to feel nervous — your therapist has seen it before and will not rush you.
- —You are in control of what you share and when.
- —If the fit does not feel right, that is okay — finding the right therapist matters more than sticking with the first one.
- —Sessions are 50 minutes. Telehealth sessions work just like in-person — just from wherever you are comfortable.
Ready when you are
There is no perfect moment to start. Reaching out is the hardest part — and you have already done it by being here.
